Kasteel (castle) Duivenvoorde has a permanent place in the festival since the very first edition in 2003. The intimate, historic ambiance of this castle contributes to the personal atmosphere that is so characteristic of our festival concerts.
Although this year the theme is Across the border, the search by composers for their own national identity -'within the border', so to speak - has produced much beautiful music. The Matangi Quartet lets us hear how three 19th-century composers went looking for the basis of their musical origins: the Spaniard Turina who wrote Andalusian music, the Czech Smetana who sought the essence of the Bohemian music, and Grieg who asked himself in a Hardanger farmhouse what Norwegian music actually is...
The Matangis have been on the wish list of the festival for a long time, and now they are finally here. What could be more appropriate - a quartet from within the city walls of The Hague!
