This year we commemorate the Dutch painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, who created wonderful seascapes and the world famous panorama, one of The Hague’s main attractions.

Mesdag’s beloved sea is the subject of this programme. You will enjoy the world premiere of I fear not wave nor wind!, a brand new piece by Leo Samama. You will hear how Samuel Barber with Dover Beach (for baritone and string quartet) brought a powerful ode to the rough coast near Dover.  Jasper Schweppe performs some sea songs by Brahms as well – the composer spent his youth in Hamburg, one of Germany’s main ports.

In 1825 Hokusai created his world famous woodcut of a wave, while the Netherlands suffered from one of the worst floods in its history. In the same year Beethoven completed his String Quartet, opus 132. The Dudok Quartet performs this gem from the chamber music repertoire as a tribute to Mesdag, who  loved Beethoven’s quartets a lot.

Mesdag’s impressions of the sea will be shared by Henk Grootveld, who reads parts from the painter’s letters . Born and raised in Scheveningen Henk Grootveld wrote several volumes of poetry (Lofzang op Den Haag & Scheveningen and Poëzie op Pootjes). He is director of the board of Panorama Mesdag.
